A bridge at the border between China and Nepal has been washed away by a flash flood.

The Meteri Bridge at the Rasuwagadhi Border Point in the north of Nepal was struck by the flood in the early hours (local time) today. The waters also swept away nine loaded containers from the customs yard.

The missing people include police officers and civilians from both Nepal and China.

The bridge was rebuilt in 2019 after it was seriously damaged in a 2015 earthquake.

The local government has warned that there is still a risk of flooding and landslides.
