New guidance on managing emissions from concrete use aims to prepare transport agencies and the industry for a future of very low or zero carbon concrete technologies.

Austroads, the umbrella organisation of Australian and New Zealand transport agencies, has published new guidance on managing the emissions associated with concrete used in road and rail projects.

It recommends optimising existing technologies for the short term, while supporting development of alternative cementitious materials in the medium term, and then preparing for zero carbon technologies as they become commercially viable.

The guidance provides clear, practical pathways for agencies to reduce embodied carbon while maintaining long term asset performance. It supports informed decision making by clarifying opportunities within existing standards, strengthening the use of carbon data, improving understanding of performance outcomes, and encouraging collaboration across industry and supply chains.

The guidelines are available from Austroads.
