Failure of an expansion joint has closed the Memorial Bridge over the Mississippi river in Quincy, Illinois.
Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) found the failed joint in a routine inspection and immediately closed the steel truss structure, which carries eastbound traffic. The bridge will be closed for a month. Traffic has been diverted to Bayview Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge which is usually westbound only.
The repair, carried out by IDOT’s own team, will involve replacement of concrete surrounding the joint on the Memorial Bridge, which dates to 1930.
IDOT, working with Missouri Department of Transportation, will ultimately replace the Memorial Bridge, which is considered outdated. Work is slated to start in 2029.
