The project to replace two bridges in north-eastern USA has had a US$1.09 billion funding boost approved by Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

Sagamore Bridge and Borne Bridge take major roads over the Cape Cod Canal, and are known as the Cape Cod Bridges. The arch bridges with suspended decks are both 90 years old. In 2019, the owner of the two bridges, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), recommended that they be replaced (link opens in new tab).

The funds are part of MassDOT’s five-year capital investment plan. Other bridge projects that will benefit include replacement of Kernwood Avenue Bridge over the Danvers River and the Hall-Whitaker Drawbridge over the Bass River in Beverly and Salem (US$241 million in total). The project to replace Rourke Bridge was awarded US$269 million. And the replacement of the Arthur J. McKenna Bridge received US$176 million.
